In Skegrie in southern Sweden, the “Stenmarks Restaurant & Greenhouse” is probably the most climate-friendly restaurant in the world. The client, Claes Stenmark, is relying on a foundation made almost entirely of GLAPOR cellular glass – a total of 121 m³ of sheets in special formats were used.
Instead of concrete, the building is based on a unique combination of cellular glass and cross-laminated timber (CLT), supported by ground screws. This not only saves CO₂, but also allows the building to be completely dismantled – in the spirit of circular construction. The boards simultaneously serve as a load-bearing element, insulation and support.
The project is also pioneering in terms of energy: a climate battery insulated with GLAPOR stores excess heat for maximum efficiency. In this way, Stenmark aims to reduce the climate impact of construction and operation by up to 90 %.
A bold step that shows just how far sustainable building can be taken today. GLAPOR cellular glass is more than just a material – it is part of a shared vision of lifelong sustainability.
