Insulation under screed is about more than just thermal insulation: compressive strength, moisture resistance and ecology make all the difference.

Structure, function and variants of screed insulation

Screed insulation is used to protect against cold, moisture and mechanical stress. There are two basic systems to choose from:

  • Insulating gravel under screed: Mineral products such as glass cellular gravel are ideal for uneven substrates or under floor slabs in new builds. They are capillary-breaking, pressure-resistant and open to diffusion.
  • Insulation boards under screed: EPS and XPS are widely used, but are at a clear disadvantage in terms of environmental compatibility, moisture protection and fire safety: they are flammable, based on crude oil and react sensitively to moisture. GLAPOR cellular glass boards, on the other hand, are non-combustible (A1), water-resistant, pressure-resistant up to 1,600 kPa and consist of 100% recycled glass – permanently stable and ecologically superior.
