Insulating underground storage tanks
GLAPOR cellular glass enables permanently diffusion-tight, pressure-stable and non-combustible insulation of underground storage tanks and Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) cover constructions – even at storage temperatures of up to approx. 95 °C. The closed-cell structure protects the seal and storage structure for more than 50 years and also allows surfaces that can be walked or driven on as well as pontoon solutions for dual use of the cover.
Meldorf underground storage tank: key project for the heating transition
In Germany, over 200 billion kWh of industrial waste heat goes unused every year. This could supply around 15 million households with heat – the total demand of all homes in Bavaria, Saxony and Berlin combined.
Things are different in Meldorf in Schleswig-Holstein. Ramboll has built Germany’s first underground reservoir here.
This stores industrial waste heat from a local printing plant and solar thermal energy and makes it available as district heating.
The storage facility holds around 1,500 MWh of thermal energy – enough for 55 buildings – and reduces annual emissions by around 1,000 tons of CO₂.

More InformationWhat makes cellular glass the most reliable solution for PTES insulation

GLAPOR is one of the leading European solution providers for lid constructions for thermal underground storage tanks (TES). The systems are developed and implemented together with renowned European engineering and construction partners.
A heat storage tank with 85 °C hot water, a depth of 7.5 meters and a volume of millions of liters places extreme demands on materials and planning. Conventional insulation materials would decompose when exposed to moisture and temperature fluctuations. GLAPOR cellular glass, on the other hand, retains its insulating performance permanently – it is pressure-resistant, dimensionally stable, vapor-tight and resistant to moisture penetration.
In the project in Meldorf, the insulating material was not only used as thermal insulation, but also as a central safety component: it prevents energy loss, protects the geomembrane and makes the storage tank economically viable in the long term. What’s more, cellular glass does not rot, does not attract pests and consists of 100% recycled glass – a building material that brings together the circular economy and the heat transition.
