Pressure-resistant insulation for flat roofs that can be driven on

A roof that can be driven on – also known as a traffic roof or parking roof – places high demands on statics, waterproofing and, in particular, the compressive strength of the insulation. Safe and long-lasting use can only be guaranteed with pressure-resistant, water-resistant and permanently stable insulation.

Requirements for accessible roofs

Roofs that can be driven on must not only withstand the usual weather influences, but also additional dynamic loads from vehicles or pedestrians. The following requirements must therefore be observed:

  • Load-bearing capacity: The roof structure must be able to safely absorb the additional loads – pressure-resistant, settlement-free insulation is essential.
  • Sealing: A highly resilient, root-resistant and mechanically resistant seal is required.
  • Thermal insulation: The insulation must be pressure-resistant, dimensionally stable and water-resistant to ensure long-term functionality.
  • Drainage: Effective drainage prevents water accumulation and protects the roof structure.
  • Fire protection: The materials used must comply with the applicable fire protection requirements.

Solution for accessible cellar ceilings

The renovation of courtyard basement ceilings requires insulation materials that can permanently absorb high loads – while keeping their own weight as low as possible. This is because many existing ceilings have a limited load-bearing reserve, but must be able to be walked on or even driven on. This is precisely where GLAPOR cellular glass comes into its own: It is extremely pressure-resistant (up to 1,600 kPa) and at the same time lightweight and dimensionally stable – ideal for used exterior surfaces above heated rooms.

Thanks to its waterproof and vapor-tight structure, it reliably protects the construction from moisture ingress. As a non-combustible insulating material (class A1), it can also be used without restriction in safety-relevant areas such as above underground garages. And: cellular glass consists of 100% recycled glass – ecological, durable, recyclable.

Are you planning a renovation under load? Then rely on a material that is permanently load-bearing – with minimal weight. We will be happy to support you with planning, installation and tendering.

Pressure-resistant insulation for accessible roofs: the advantages of cellular glass

cellular glass offers a combination of high compressive strength, water resistance and sustainability, which makes it particularly suitable for roofs that can be driven on:

  • High compressive strength: With a compressive strength of up to 1,600 kPa, cellular glass can withstand even high loads from vehicles.
  • Water and vapor-tight: cellular glass does not absorb water and protects the roof structure from moisture damage.
  • Non-combustible: As a class A1 building material, cellular glass helps to meet fire protection requirements.
  • Sustainable: Made from 100% recycled glass, cellular glass is environmentally friendly and fully recyclable.
  • Durable: cellular glass retains its technical properties over the entire service life of the roof.

FAQ

What thickness should flat roof insulation have?

The required thickness depends on the desired U-value and the insulation material used. According to the German Building Energy Act (GEG), the U-value should not exceed 0.20 W/(m²K). With cellular glass, this value can already be achieved with a lower insulation thickness.

The optimum insulation combines good insulation values, fire protection, compressive strength and environmental compatibility. cellular glass meets all these criteria and is therefore an excellent choice for sustainable construction.

Higher compressive strength is required for walkable roofs or those with superstructures. GLAPOR cellular glass offers compressive strengths of up to 1,600 kPa and is therefore ideal for all types of walk-on flat roof applications.

This depends on the material used. While EPS, XPS and PUR are combustible, cellular glass is non-combustible (A1) and therefore offers a high level of fire protection.

The costs vary depending on the material, roof size and structure. On average, the costs are between 50 and 150 euros per square meter. cellular glass is more cost-effective in the long term compared to petroleum-based insulation materials such as XPS or PUR due to its durability and maintenance-free nature.
