Green roof insulation: Effective thermal insulation for flat roofs

Green roofs – whether extensive or intensive – require a permanently pressure-resistant, non-combustible and moisture-proof insulation layer. GLAPOR cellular glass boards offer just that: mineral, water-resistant, dimensionally stable and ideal for combining with green roofs and PV systems.

Green roof insulation: Functionality and structure

A green roof consists of several layers that together provide thermal insulation, water retention and plant support. The insulation plays a central role: it prevents heat loss in winter, protects against overheating in summer and secures the roof structure against moisture and stress.

The following is an exemplary structure:

  1. Vegetation layer – greening with suitable plants
  2. Substrate layer – nutrient-rich layer for plant growth
  3. Filter fleece – Prevents the penetration of fine particles into the drainage layer
  4. Drainage and water storage layer – drains water and stores moisture
  5. Protective and separating layer – Protects the waterproofing from mechanical damage
  6. Root-resistant waterproofing – Prevents root ingrowth into the roof structure
  7. Green roof insulation – Reduces heat loss and protects against temperature extremes
  8. Vapor barrier – Blocks moisture from the interior
  9. Load-bearing roof structure – e.g. concrete ceiling or timber formwork

This structure varies depending on whether a compact roof, a classic warm roof or an inverted roof is planned.

Green roofs in particular show why cellular glass is so important: over the years, the vegetation changes, maintenance equipment moves along maintenance paths, PV systems are extended or readjusted – the roof surface remains in motion. Insulation that settles, absorbs moisture or is flammable can pose real risks here.

cellular glass, on the other hand, remains pressure-resistant, dimensionally stable and non-combustible for life. This means that the green roof not only remains ecologically valuable, but also structurally safe – from the waterproofing to the last maintenance interval.

Green roof insulation: The advantages of cellular glass

For a safe and durable green roof, you need an insulating material that works reliably under all conditions. GLAPOR cellular glass offers just that:

  • Technically stable – for a lifetime: no moisture absorption, no deformation – permanently reliable insulation performance.
  • Compression-free and extremely pressure-resistant: Ideal for green roofs, terraces, technical or PV surfaces (up to 1,600 kPa).
  • Best fire and heat protection: non-combustible (A1) and thermally insulating – without compromise.
  • Fast, clean processing: easy to cut, no processing waste – no microplastics, just clean glass powder (Z0).

GLAPOR cellular glass is therefore the well thought-out solution for anyone who wants to insulate a green roof in a permanently efficient, resilient and sustainable way.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about green roof insulation

FAQ

How many cm of insulation does a green roof need?

The required thickness depends on the desired U-value and the insulation material used. According to the German Building Energy Act (GEG), the U-value should not exceed 0.20 W/(m²K). With cellular glass, this value can already be achieved with a lower insulation thickness.

cellular glass is particularly suitable for green roofs as it is pressure-resistant, water-resistant and non-combustible. It is also ecologically beneficial as it is made from recycled glass and is free from harmful substances.

With a warm roof, the insulation lies under the waterproofing, whereas with an inverted roof it lies on top. The warm roof requires a careful vapor barrier, whereas the inverted roof requires special insulation materials that are water-resistant.

A warm roof can lead to moisture problems if not installed properly, especially if the vapor barrier is not installed correctly. Precise planning and execution is therefore crucial.

One disadvantage of the inverted roof is the limited choice of insulating materials – only water-resistant materials may be used. In addition, moisture penetrating between the boards can lead to thermal bridges and noticeably reduce the insulating effect. This reduces energy efficiency, especially if the water drainage does not function reliably or the installation was not carried out properly.
